Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine established in 1844, is the first Western medical hospital in Shanghai after the city's opening as a port. The hospital currently consists of four campuses (East, West, South, and North) and the Shanghai Cancer Institute, forming a comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospital with a full range of disciplines, integrating medical treatment, teaching, and research. It has been awarded the title of "Shanghai Civilized Unit" for 16 consecutive times and "National Civilized Unit" for three consecutive terms. Additionally, it has received an "A" grade in the annual performance evaluation of hospital directors by the Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center for 17 consecutive years.
The East Campus is located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong and was completed and put into use in October 1999. The West Campus is situated in the central business district of Huangpu District, adjacent to the Bund. The South Campus is located in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, and was completed and put into use in December 2012, officially integrated into Renji Hospital on October 20, 2020. The North Campus is located at Juye Road and Lingshan Road, and was fully operational in July 2013. The Cancer Institute is located on Xietu Road and officially merged with Renji Hospital in October 2010, achieving "institute-hospital integration."
Since its establishment, the hospital has had two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. As of the end of 2023, the hospital employs 4,780 staff members, including 714 experts with senior and associate senior titles, 177 doctoral supervisors, and 208 master's supervisors.
The hospital's four campuses have a total of 2,750 approved beds and 54 clinical and technical departments. In 2023, the hospital handled 6.4364 million outpatient and emergency visits, 215,800 inpatient discharges, 105,200 inpatient surgeries, 31,500 fourth-level surgeries, 31,000 minimally invasive surgeries, and 41,100 day surgeries, with an average hospital stay of 5.23 days and a drug ratio of 24.43%. The hospital is equipped with advanced medical devices such as the dual-source photon-counting CT, positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MR), endoscopic surgical instrument control system (Da Vinci surgical robot), X-ray stereotactic radiotherapy system, helical tomotherapy (TomoTherapy), linear accelerator (LA), 320-row 640-layer ultra-fast spiral CT, hybrid operating room system, and remote medical teaching system.
